JOIN OUR CLUB
Wembley Basketball Club has teams playing in both the Altona Basketball Competition and the Westgate Basketball Competition. We have teams in all age groups from Under 8s through to U21s, with multiple divisions in each grade.
REGISTER A NEW PLAYER
We maintain a waitlist of players who are interested in joining a team. Preference will be given to players who were born in the same year as their teammates. This allows the team to stay together as they move through the age groups every two years (eg u8, u10, u12 etc).
We’re proud to see teams at Wembley Junior Basketball Club grow together from Under 8s to Under 21s, fostering strong friendships. While we don’t grade teams by ability in the younger years, in older age groups, we may need to make some rebalancing adjustments to ensure competitive balance. This is done with careful consideration, always prioritising the overall enjoyment and development of our players.

SEASON DETAILS
Altona Basketball Competition
All games are played at the Altona Sports Centre in Altona Meadows on either Friday night or Saturday.
Altona Summer Competition: 12th October 2024 – 22nd March 2025
Altona Winter Competition: 28th April 2025 – 20th September 2025
Westgate Basketball Competition
Games are played at various locations throughout the Inner West including RecWest Braybrook, Rec West West Footscray, Whitten Oval, Footscray North Primary School, Footscray High School Barkly Campus and Victoria University. All games are played on Friday night and Saturday.
Westgate Summer Competition: 12th October 2024 – 15th March 2025
Westgate Winter Competition: 3rd May 2025 – 13th September 2025
SELECTING YOUR LEAGUE
You can choose to play in either the Altona Basketball League or the Westgate Basketball competition. Your child’s birth year will determine their team eligibility.
AGE ELIGIBILITY
Age groups are defined by the age of a player at 31st of December of the year the season ends (e.g. end of 2025). All age group competitions are split by gender except for the Under 8’s who can play as a mixed team at Altona on Friday nights.
A player may play in a higher level age grouping, but not more than one level above their eligible age. For example, an 11-year-old player is able to play in either Under 12s (their eligible age) or Under 14s (one level above their age) but not in Under 16s (two levels above their age).
REGISTRATION & INSURANCE
Our Wembley Basketball Club registration fee is currently $220 per season and we have a strict no pay, no play policy.
Players are also required to pay $25 per year for compulsory Basketball Victoria insurance.
CLEARANCES & TRANSFERS
Transfers to and from Wembley Junior Basketball Club require clearance approval. Note that specific rules apply for representative players who wish to join teams. If the player is currently playing or has previously played representative basketball or has attended representative selection tryouts they will be subject to scrutiny from the ABBA committee for any transfer.

LEARNING THE GAME
There are introductory basketball programs for children to learn the basics before playing competition. It is not necessary for your child to attend these programs prior to joining our club, but it does help with skill development. For more information, please see the Altona Bay Basketball Association website or Westgate Basketball Association website.
The Club also has relationships with professional sporting bodies and coaches and will occasionally run clinics for players based on demand.
