Code of Conduct

This code of conduct is relevant to all volunteers. Some aspects are coach specific (6 and 9) but the value of each must be supported by all our volunteers, parents and players.
  1. Display control, respect and professionalism to all involved in the sport. This includes opponents, Coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Encourage players to do the same.
  2. Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake or not coming first.
  3. Be reasonable in your demands on players time, energy and enthusiasm.
  4. Operate within the rules and spirit of your sport and teach your players to do the same.
  5. Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. All young players are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.
  6. Avoid over playing the talented players; the average need and deserve equal time.
  7. Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players.
  8. Show concern and caution toward sick and injured players. Follow the advice of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition.
  9. Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young people.
  10. Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development.
  11. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  12. Young people participate for pleasure and winning is only part of the fun.

Whilst this is the Club’s own code of conduct, we are governed by Basketball Victoria and the broader codes of conduct https://www.basketballvictoria.com.au/cdn/byuip6j02lssg4ok

Child Protection Policy

Wembley Junior Basketball Club is committed to ensuring that the children in our program are provided with the safest possible environment to enjoy the game of basketball. The club is looking to put in place processes to support and protect our members.

The Club and individuals are open to penalties if the following regulations are not adhered to.

The mechanisms that we must adhere to are:

1. Working With Children Check – registered with Wembley, Altona and Westgate and
2. Member Protection Statutory Declaration set out by Basketball Victoria and
3. Register as a coach or volunteer (Team Managers or others who are in contact with the kids regularly) with Altona through Sporting Pulse.

The club has also appointed a Child Protection officer who at the last update of this page is Sally Poupard.

For any questions, concerns or to report an incident you can report directly to Sally via childsafety@wembleybasketball.com.au.

If you do not get a response in a timely manner from the Child Protection Officer, do not hesitate to escalate to a Committee Member (see the Contact Details page) immediately or to an appropriate authority (See advice below).

As per current advice via the Child Protection Policy from Basketball Victoria:

Reporting a Concern – All suspicions and allegations MUST be reported appropriately. It is recognised that strong emotions can be aroused particularly in cases where sexual abuse is suspected or where there is misplaced loyalty to a colleague. It is important to understand these feelings but not allow them to interfere with your judgement about any action to take.

Basketball Victoria expects it’s members and staff to discuss any concerns they may have about the welfare of a child IMMEDIATELY with the person in charge and subsequently to check that appropriate action has been taken. If the nominated club welfare officer is not available you should take responsibility and seek advice from the duty officer at your local social services department or the police. Telephone numbers can be found in your local directory.

Working With Children Checks (WWCC)

Anybody who is in close contact with children needs to have a Working With Children Check (WWCC). This is a requirement of the Working With Children Act 2005 (http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/resources/legislation/)as well as the basketball associations our teams are associated with.

Coaches, Team Manager, Volunteers, Committee Members need to have a WWCC. The Club also suggests any parents who may fill in from time to time should also get a WWCC.
